Day in the Life: Emma, Public Relations Coordinator

My time at 834 Design & Marketing began in March 2016 as an associate. I remember actively reading past employees’ Day in the Life blog spotlights and thought, “How do I get to be them?” Fast forward to one year later, and here I am. Woah.

But, anyways …

As the Public Relations Coordinator for Team 834, my days are filled with inconsistencies, running around like a crazy person, and working outside of the 9-to-5 realm. Our agency runs things a tad differently (shocking, I know). As the PR Coordinator, my job is to execute public relations for all of 834’s clients, alongside our Boss Lady, Kim. My position requires immense communication, time management, people-skills, and writing abilities, but I wouldn’t have it an other way. On any given day my tasks could include: writing and pitching a release to local media outlets, heading to local news and radio stations to support clients during their interviews, writing content for various publications, stalking local, regional, and national media, fostering relationships with social media influencers, drafting media kits, blog management, client meetings and more.

Let’s break this down:

6 a.m. – Alarm #1

6:10 a.m. – Alarm #2

6:20 a.m. – Alarm #3

6:45 a.m. – Wakeup to a phone call from my boyfriend telling me to get up. (This usually forces me to get up and moving).

8 a.m. – I finally make it into the office! By this point, I’m 50% pissed off due to the amount of construction on my way to work and 50% obnoxiously happy to see my coworkers. My first tasks are to pour myself a cup of coffee, organize my mile-long list of to dos for the day, and give the office dogs some love.

8:30 a.m. – Time to crank shit out. I find that I’m most productive during the morning hours, so I’m usually in my, “don’t talk to me or else I will hurt you,” type of mood during this time. When working at a small business agency, it truly is an ‘all hands on deck’ situation every. single. day. There is always something that I can be doing, because there is that much work to do.

11 a.m. – I’m starting to get hangry (extreme hunger, which leads to anger) by this time. Also, buzzing from a caffeine high. Still in my “don’t talk to me or else I will hurt you,” mode.

Noon, Lunch – Potentially my favorite time of the day! Aside from happy hour.

12:30 p.m. – Time for a walk around the block with coworkers to help clear our minds and experience the growing West Side (10/10 would recommend going on a walk to break up the monotony of your day).

4 p.m. – My productivity levels begin to decline – Coffee it is. Wait, is it too early for happy hour?

6 p.m. – I’m finally back home! Time to shower my fur-babies with love, and take them for a walk around the Fulton Heights neighborhood.

6:30 p.m. – Cooking for one person sucks – Easy, ready-to-make dinners it is.

7 p.m. – The end of the day can either go two ways: Binge-watching reality television or getting more work done. I try to create a work-life balance, but as you can see I still have a lot of “work” to do in this balancing act (no pun intended).

10:30 p.m. – Goodnight world. Get ready to do it all again tomorrow.
